Back to Back: Why Backlinks Are Essential for Web Marketing
One of the primary ways that Google and other search engines connect legal consumers to law firms, is through domain authority, which is attributed to your website. You can check yours for free here. Domain authority is effectively a measure of the extent to which a search engine views you/your business (through the lens of your website) as providing relevant expertise in your space. In other words, ‘Are you [an employment] lawyer someone searching for those services should reach out to?’
The question is: How do you build domain authority? There are a lot of ways to answer that query – but, one primary response is: backlinks. And, it’s maybe the most important.
What’s a ‘backlink’? It’s simply a link to your website, appearing on another website. So, for example, claiming a ‘directory profile’, like Google Business Profile or Avvo, or creating a social media profile, and linking your website from it – are both simple ways to create backlinks. Simplistically, more backlinks mean more domain authority. But, not all backlinks are created equal. You’ll want relevant and high-quality backlinks. So, if you’re a lawyer, getting a backlink from your local bar association is better than getting a backlink from your local pet store. Not only is the former more relevant, the former is also a community stakeholder in the legal space. Building a ‘content marketing program’, is also a tremendous way to capture relevant, high-quality backlinks, since folks may repost your content (of whatever sort), onto their websites.
If this is the first time you’re hearing about backlinks; well, you’d better get started developing them, because your competition likely already has. If you’re aware of backlinks, but yours are not proliferating; well, it’s probably time to get a backlink strategy together.
